Welcome to my new blog! Back in March I decided that I would start walking to work and back, a distance of nearly 4 miles each way. I am not too fond of rain and getting soaked, so I set up limits to walk on dry days only, at least dry on my way to work, so I didn't have to sit in my office in wet clothes all day! It didn't matter so much walking home ad I could always take a hot shower. No-one could have predicted just how dry this year would be, so I have walked an awful lot of days!
This obsession with walking has led to me to also walking to a lot of other places. Shortly after starting on this healthy campaign, I thought, 'Maybe I ought to list the different species of bird I see whilst on foot'. And that is where my new bird list started! My 'On Foot' list is made up of all the birds I have seen on foot while walking FROM my home. Obviously species seen from my house count, as do birds I have previously seen on foot from home. Therefore, such gems as Waxwing and White Stork were already there as 'armchair' ticks!
My only rule is that I must have walked to the bird from my home. I must get TO the bird on foot, but allow myself to catch public transport or get a lift home if I'm tired! Working and living beside the Exe estuary and by the coast puts me in a great position to add a whole load of new species to my list.
Since March I have added the following good birds to my On Foot List:
Balearic Shearwater
European Storm Petrel
Cattle Egret
Spoonbill
American Wigeon
Marsh Harrier
Yellow-legged Gull
White-winged Black Tern
putative Italian Sparrow
So, as you can see, the potential is great!
The purpose of this blog is to encourage others to take the healthy option and rely less on their motor vehicles, but mainly to act as an aide-memoire for my good self!
I also wish to add that I have suffered a couple of minor foot injuries while doing all this walking (luckily they haven't stopped me for long) and I have jumped in my car to get to a bird when my time has been extremely limited!
I will update this blog ad and when I can.
Terry
